One day, a long, long time ago, Life and Death sat in a field together. Life was beautiful. Her long blue locks cascaded down her shoulders like a flowing river, her dress pure white, tinted with light shades of violet. She was young compared to Death who had been around since the dawn of time. She looked up to him like a father even though they were opposites. Green birds fluttered around Life, landing on her shoulders and head gently, singing soft melodies in her ear while Death gazed over the horizon, observing the creatures Life had created. It was a sad to think that he would have to take away their fragile lives, but that was what he was meant to do. Life saw Death watching over the creatures she loved and smiled. Those creatures were one of Life's favourites, they were so intelligent and independent, Life hardly had to interfere. She looked over to see Death had gone, a sorrow filled wail ran through her ears making her frown. Why would one of her creatures be so sad? The birds around her flinched when Death returned.
"Death, why did my creatures sound so sad?" Life questioned, her voice soft and gentle.
"It was time for one to leave this world and move on to the other." Death replied simply, his voice deep, scratched and gruff as if he had coughed for several days straight. Life frowned once more, but only for a second. She knew that it was just part of the cycle and soon another one of her creatures would replace the last. A smile formed on her red lips as she watched the green birds fly from her and away into the sky. One how ever, fell to the ground, blood running down it's body. Death gently picked up the bird with delicate fingers.
"Death." Life said. "Why do my creatures love me, but hate you?"
Death tilted his head towards the young woman, his black shawl moving in the breeze. "Because you are a beautiful lie, and I am a painful truth."
